How Many Big Bags Fit in a Truck, Railcar or 20/40 ft Containerin a Truck or Container
A standard curtainsider truck holds 22–30 big bags: for ~1000 kg loads the 22-tonne payload is the limit, for light cargo — the floor area. A 20-ft container takes 10–12 bags, a 40-ft — 24–26, a boxcar — 45–66. Below are tables by bag size and a formula to calculate your own case in a minute.
The exact answer always comes down to two constraints, whichever hits first: the vehicle payload (how many tonnes you may carry) and geometry (how many bags physically fit on the floor and in tiers). Heavy cargo — sand, cement, grain — almost always hits the tonnage limit first; light cargo — pellets, sawdust, polymer granules — the floor area and height. How many big bags fit in a truck
A standard curtainsider trailer has a 13.6 × 2.45 m floor and a payload of about 22 tonnes. Big bags with a 90×90 cm base fit two across and 14–15 rows along — that is 28–30 bags in a single tier. But 30 one-tonne bags is 30 t, so with heavy cargo the truck "runs out" of payload before floor:

Practical rule of thumb: grain — 22 big bags of ~1000 kg per truck, pellets — 28–30, sand and cement — 22 bags filled to 60–70% of volume. A second tier is acceptable only for light cargo and SF 6:1 bags — heavy bags are never stacked in transit.
How many big bags fit in a 20 ft and 40 ft container
Sea containers are narrower than a truck (2.35 m inside), so 90×90 cm big bags fit only two across. The 2.39 m height allows a single tier of standard 130–150 cm bags:

Note: in a 20-ft container big bags use only ~11 of the available 21.7 tonnes. If bulk cargo goes for export, it is often cheaper per tonne to load it directly into the container with a container liner — a soft full-volume insert that lets the same 20-ft box carry up to 21 t.
How many big bags fit in a railcar
A boxcar (13.8 × 2.76 m floor, 68 t payload) takes 90×90 bags three across — about 45 bags in one tier; light cargo in two tiers reaches 80–90, while for grain the weight limit allows 66–68 one-tonne bags. The formula for your own cargo
Three steps are enough. Example — wheat in a truck:
- Weight of one filled bag: volume 1.05 m³ × wheat bulk density 0.75 t/m³ ≈ 0.78 t.
- Payload limit: 22 t ÷ 0.78 t = 28 bags.
- Geometry limit: 28–30 bags per tier. Take the smaller number — 28 big bags of wheat (~21.8 t) per truck.

How big bags are loaded and secured
- ✔Loading — by forklift using the lifting loops or by crane from above; bags are placed tightly, without gaps between rows, to prevent shifting in transit.
- ✔A second tier — only for SF 6:1 bags with light cargo, with pallets or spacers between tiers.
- ✔For unloading without pallets or a ramp, sling bags are convenient — a soft alternative a forklift removes in 2 minutes.
- ✔The last row in a truck is secured with straps to the side posts — the curtain is not a securing device.
