Big Bags for Sand and Construction Materials

Sand, crushed stone and dry mixes require reinforced big bags made of 180–220 g/m² fabric. The key rule: sand weighs 1500–1600 kg/m³, so a 1000 kg big bag is filled to only two thirds of its volume — about 0.6–0.65 m³. A bag filled to the top with sand would weigh over 1.5 tonnes and exceed the safe working load.

How Much Material Fits in a Big Bag
Use the bulk density of the material as a guide — the higher it is, the less bag volume you can use at the same load rating. Calculation for a 1000 kg SWL bag:
| Material | Bulk density | Max fill of a 1000 kg bag |
|---|---|---|
| Dry sand | 1.50–1.60 t/m³ | ≈ 0.60–0.65 m³ |
| Wet sand | 1.70–1.90 t/m³ | ≈ 0.55 m³ |
| Crushed stone 5–20 | 1.35–1.45 t/m³ | ≈ 0.70 m³ |
| Cement | 1.10–1.30 t/m³ | ≈ 0.80 m³ |
| Gypsum, dry mix | 0.80–1.00 t/m³ | ≈ 1.00 m³ (full) |
| Expanded clay | 0.35–0.50 t/m³ | full volume |
| Construction debris | 0.80–1.20 t/m³ | ≈ 0.85 m³ |
Big Bags for Debris and Demolition
For one-time debris removal, single-use SF 5:1 big bags are the economical choice: they cost less, and removal is done by crane or loader crane straight from the floor or scaffolding. Four lifting loops let you attach a spreader beam without extra rigging.
Cement and Dry Mixes: Lamination or Liner
Cement fears moisture and generates heavy dust. Laminated fabric keeps the dust inside and shields against brief rain; for long-term storage add a 100–120 µm polyethylene liner for full sealing even in high humidity.
On-Site Handling: Crane, Loader Crane, Forklift
Lift a big bag only by all four loops at once — with a hook and spreader beam or forklift tines. Lifting by one or two loops overloads the seams and is the main cause of failures on construction sites. For outdoor storage choose models with a skirt to protect the contents between shifts.

FAQ
How much sand fits in a 1000 kg big bag?
About 0.6–0.65 m³ — which is roughly one tonne of dry sand. Never fill the bag to the top with sand: a full volume would weigh 1.5+ tonnes and exceed the safe working load.
Can a sand-filled big bag be lifted by crane?
Yes — by all four loops at once, using a hook with a spreader beam or slings. Never lift by a single loop: the seams are not rated for it.
Which big bag is best for construction debris?
A single-use 4-loop bag of 180 g/m² fabric with SF 5:1 is the best value. If the container will be reused, choose SF 6:1 with 200+ g/m² fabric.
Will a big bag hold wet sand?
Yes, but note that wet sand is 15–20% heavier than dry. Reduce the fill volume accordingly to stay within the SWL and use fabric of 200 g/m² or more.
